The History of Hawai‘i From Our Files: Hawai‘i’s Young Aquatic Athletes of 1925
HONOLULU Magazine emerged from predecessor Paradise of the Pacific, which began in 1888, fulfilling a commission by King Kalākaua. That makes this the oldest continuously published magazine west of the Mississippi with an enviable archive worth diving into each month. Here’s a look back at December 1925.
Paradise wrote about the impressive aquatic athletic reputation developed by so many young residents because of weather that allows us to play outdoors year-round.
“The Hawaiian diving boys or ‘wharf rats’ stage an exhibition of skill in swimming and diving for coins. Their prowess proves Hawaii’s fame for swimming in mainland and Olympic meets.”
Hawai‘i still earns that reputation: Two of the four U.S. athletes tapped to compete in the Olympics’ first surfing competition next year in Tokyo are from the Islands.
