Here’s Where You Can Get a Lucky Fukubukuro Bag on O‘ahu

To celebrate the New Year, retailers will be selling mystery grab bags at deeply discounted prices.

As the holiday season winds down, there’s one big shopping event left on the calendar. Celebrated the last week of December and first week of January, Fukubukuro is the Japanese tradition that ushers in a New Year filled with good fortune and prosperity through the purchase of “lucky bags”. Retailers offer sealed bags filled with mystery merchandise at deeply discounted prices—contents are often worth double the cost or more. And nowadays, Japanese stores aren’t the only participants—local and national brands are also getting in on the fun, which means there are ton of amazing deals to be had.

Jan. 1, 2025, center hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with some stores open as early as 8 a.m.

More than 40 retailers will offer Happy Grab Bags packed with mystery merchandise worth at least double the price of the bag. Other day-of festivities include taiko and Japanese lion dance performances by Kenny Endo and the Taiko Center of the Pacific happening at 1 and 3 p.m.
