It all started with a mama bird. To help her 3-year-old daughter connect with native species, local artist and conservation biologist Ariel Imoto illustrated a set of endemic Hawai‘i birds. Imoto then teamed up with friend Danya Weber, founder of Hilo label Laulima, to bring the creatures to life in the form of charming hair clips. The range features endangered nēnē, ‘alae ‘ula (Hawaiian waterbird) and several Hawaiian honeycreepers, including ‘akēpa, ‘akikiki, ‘ākohekohe, kiwikiu and ‘i‘iwi, designed to spark awareness while adding local flair to your ’do.
