Do you remember the first time you heard Hawaiian music? For many who grew up here, it could have been at a family party or weekends spent at grandma’s house. Wherever it was, we knew at that moment we had experienced something special.
Now, many years later, these songs have turned into solid playlists filled with favorite Hawaiian music artists spanning both the present day and yesteryear. When these songs are played, they transport listeners back in time to cherished moments—recollections tied to the music itself. From the first lūʻau attended to the excitement of cruising with friends through Waikīkī to the joy of holding loved ones close for the first time. The remembrances tied to these songs go on and on, like a soundtrack to our shared history, evoking memories that resonate across generations.
This is the power of music. It transcends mere sound. Listening to music is an experience that touches the heart, stimulates the mind and speaks directly to the soul. It is a form of time travel, connecting us with the past while helping to shape our present.
Through the years, PBS Hawai‘i has done exactly that while sharing the beautiful gift of Hawaiian music. This past year, we celebrated 25 magical years of PBS Hawai‘i’s iconic original program, Nā Mele. This silver jubilee marks not only the strength and stability of public media but also the passion, talent and dedication of our local artists and the loyal support of our viewers and donors.
Nā Mele premiered on April 15, 1999, with the legendary Dennis and David Kamakahi, Martin Pahinui and George Kuo. Since that memorable debut, hundreds of singers, musicians and hula dancers have graced the Nā Mele stage, each bringing their unique style, stories and contributions to the rich musical heritage of Hawai‘i.
To commemorate this remarkable achievement, PBS Hawai‘i invites you to join us for a 90-minute program celebrating Nā Mele’s 25th anniversary. This special broadcast will feature classic performances from the show as well as songs and interviews that have never before aired. It’s an all-star concert experience that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home, bringing together the very best of Hawai‘i’s island music for one unforgettable celebration.
Join us and let the music transport you, just as it has done for generations. Here’s to another 25 years of Nā Mele and the timeless beauty of Hawaiian music.
