Explore the rich traditions of Hawaiian voyaging with hands-on learning experiences for kids this weekend. On Friday evening, gaze through telescopes and hear navigators and astronomers talk story about Polynesian wayfinding and celestial navigation. Then, on Saturday morning, keiki can sail in the bay on wa‘a Kūmau, join a land-based canoe tour and enjoy cultural activities and educational booths.

Black History Month Business and Culture Expo
Saturday, Feb. 8, 2 to 7 p.m.
Celebrate the vibrant contributions of Hawai‘i’s Black community at this first-ever event hosted by the Hawai‘i Black Chamber of Commerce. Connect with local entrepreneurs and artists, shop the marketplace, enjoy food trucks, play keiki games and feel the beat of live entertainment, including African dancing and drumming, stepping, steel pan, saxophone and reggae performances.

Honolulu African American Film Festival

In honor of Black History Month, mark your calendar for 11 film screenings and panel discussions highlighting Black excellence in art and justice. The opening reception on Thursday, Feb. 6, features a documentary about R&B singer Luther Vandross, dinner by chef Lamont Brown of Maya’s Tapas and Wines and live music by saxophonist Jason Gay and friends.

Catch this production by local playwright Mary Lyon Kamitaki on stage for a few more weeks at the historic downtown theatre. Named for its setting at the southernmost tip of Hawai‘i Island, the play is filled with family drama (and literal earthquakes, too) when a grown daughter brings her new girlfriend home to meet her retired parents.
