Green Day: Native Plants From a Photographer’s Perspective
In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, we’re highlighting native Hawaiian plants shot by HONOLULU photographer Olivier Koning.

Olivier Koning began shooting endemic Hawaiian plants in his garage in 2012 as part of a HONOLULU Magazine assignment. Even after the feature was published, he carried on, deepening his understanding and appreciation of the Islands’ native greenery. Prints of his work—spare, colorful and detailed close-ups—are available at Nā Mea Hawai‘i at Ward Centre. Eventually, Koning hopes to assemble a book.
“It’s become a personal interest,” he says. “I bought every book on the subject and learned that many plants are medicinal, while others were instrumental in canoe building and other things. Hawaiians closely associate plants with their culture.”
