Catch Award-Winning Supergroup Kulāiwi
The latest installment of PBS Hawai‘i’s music series Nā Mele showcases the Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning group and hula dancer Pono Fernandez on Monday, February 27.

One year ago this month, PBS Hawaiʻi launched their new program “Home is Here,” a look at the people and places that make our Islands so special. For the opening theme, they tapped prolific singer-songwriter Shawn Kekoa Pimental–and the result was a song that, no matter where you’re from, transports you home. You can watch him perform an acoustic version of the song, as well as stories from Home is Here, on the PBS Hawaiʻi YouTube channel.
On February 27, the latest installment of the PBS Hawaiʻi music series Nā Mele welcomes Pimental back to PBS Hawaiʻi as part of the award-winning Hawaiian supergroup Kulāiwi, along with Lehua Kalima Alvarez of Na Leo Pilimehana, Nā Mele alum Kawika Kahiapo and hula dancer Pono Fernandez. After joining forces in 2018, the pandemic complicated things for the group, but they were eventually able to finish their debut album “Native Lands” in 2021. Their perseverance paid off, and the album would earn the group three awards at the 45th annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards in 2022, including album of the year, group of the year and Hawaiian music of the year. Now, they bring their gift to PBS Hawaiʻi.
