Songs of Love From Hawai‘i is an hour-long documentary that employs an innovative storytelling approach about the journeys of Korean immigrants who began arriving in Hawai‘i in 1903. More than just a film, Songs of Love From Hawai‘i is a celebration of the Korean-American heritage and resilience in Hawai‘i.

The film weaves together historical narratives with a rich tapestry of music and personal stories. The integration of archival footage and musical performances by renowned musicians such as Richard Yongjae O’Neill, Keola Beamer, Chee-Yun and Ignace “Iggy” Jang strikes a delicate balance between animation and storytelling.

The film captures the essence of the Korean-American immigrant experience through personal stories of sacrifice, courage and love. Set against the backdrop of Hawai‘i’s landscapes, the film unfolds through three distinctive episodes each showcasing different aspects of the Korean-American experience. This includes the stories of Hawai‘i’s influential Korean-American leaders like former Mayor Harry Kim and Chief Justice Ronald Moon; a tribute to a Korean picture bride; and a musical homage honoring the souls whose final resting place is Moloka‘i’s Kalaupapa.
