Alzheimer’s disease is a heartbreaking journey, one that touches the lives of millions of individuals every day. It is a progressive condition that robs people of their memories, their sense of self and ultimately their lives.

Yet, despite the overwhelming impact it has on individuals and families, it remains a mystery to many. In Hawai‘i, about 100,000 kūpuna are affected by Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Across America last year, nearly 7 million individuals aged 65 and older were living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic with no cure on the horizon despite years of research and effort. The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients and those suffering from other dementias was projected at $360 billion last year.

What makes Alzheimer’s particularly challenging is that it is not just about the person diagnosed, but a disease that affects everyone around them. The caregivers—often family members—are faced with overwhelming stress as they manage not just medical care but emotional worries, financial strains and the ever-present fear of losing a loved one to this debilitating disease.

On Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m., PBS Hawai‘i is hosting a town hall dedicated to addressing the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. The program will bring together a panel of experts and community members in a safe space. Families can ask questions, share insights and have a conversation about how we can support those living with Alzheimer’s disease, recognize early symptoms and provide resources to those in need.
