Where Time Stands Still: Stadium Giant Malts & Bar-B-Que

The family-owned eatery has remained true to its roots, still serving up solid plate lunch options.

Tucked away next to Ice Palace in Halawa’s Stadium Mall, Stadium Giant Malts & Bar-B-Que (formerly Bob’s Bar-B-Que) has been consistently serving up solid plate lunch fare since 1988. With the exception of the name change, the family-owned eatery has remained true to its roots.

The same menu board is displayed, listing the many plate lunch options and specials. Back in the day, my go-to orders were a mini BBQ chicken plate packed with a generous serving of tender, boneless BBQ chicken, a scoop of rice and mac salad, or a teriyaki chicken sandwich with tender, boneless teriyaki chicken served on a soft bun with mayo and lettuce.

After placing my order, I would always claim my favorite table located upstairs in the dining room overlooking the Ice Palace rink. There, I shared many meals and laughs with my figure skating family of friends—or just my mom—after synchronized skating practice or after countless attempts to land a double salchow. Sadly, the upstairs dining room has been closed for years.

These days, as a pescatarian, I always order the shrimp burger, a stack of perfectly crisp, deep-fried shrimp on a soft bun with tartar sauce. The stack is so high that the takeout lid practically pops off! And, of course, I always get a small chocolate malt for nostalgia.

Stadium Bar-B-Que is still quick, no frills with sensible plate lunch pricing and of course, the malts! They also cater, making it a good option for potlucks. They’ve been here for just as long as I’ve been in this neighborhood. My family moved from Mililani in 1988, and I grew up just down the street. It’s always been there for my family—a go-to where we get exactly what we expect, time after time.

Open daily 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., 4510 Salt Lake Blvd., (808) 487-6600, @stadiumbarbque
